This is The Verdant Path

Spring is officially here in the Northern Hemisphere (happy fall/autumn for those in the southern half of the world)! The sun crossed the celestial equator and traveled north at 11:06 pm EST here in NY, marking the Vernal/March/Spring Equinox. Full disclosure, I slept through it. In fact, I slept and rested through much of yesterday, still feeling the effects of the push and pull of a new season coming in - a pressure behind the eyes and the complete exhaustion of allergy season.

In Poland, there is a saying: “In March it’s like a pot”. Every type of weather can be experienced during this month: snow, rain, wind, hale, sleet, cold, heat. All the things, mixed with the opening up of the soil and flowers. This year, spring warmth came early, and while I am mourning the end of winter and my cozy, cave-like living, I can’t help but feel the excitement of new beginnings. The birch and maple sap is moving, the leaf buds are growing and opening, and the chickadees have begun their warmer month’s song. This morning, there was a thin layer of snow on the ground which melted by 9 am. Oh Spring, you fickle, fickle witch!

So, in the spirit of new beginnings I’d like to welcome you, dear readers, to The Verdant Path. This has been a seed I have been watering and giving nutrients to for a couple of years now, waiting for the right time to germinate and begin the sprouting stage (have we had it with the spring analogies yet?). Here I will be using this space to talk about herbalism and plants, their medicinal and magical uses, gardening, homesteading, embroidery, seasonal changes and living… so many different things! It’ll be part journal, part educational material, and accompanied by my partner’s beautiful photography. It’s for me and for you. As I learn I hope you will too.

The next blog post will feature Violet (Viola spp.), my first plant ally, that starts to pop up this time of year, so be on the lookout!

Please be sure to follow me on Instagram and sign up for the newsletter. I’m planning on sending newsletters out seasonally so as not to add to everyone’s influx of newsletters.

Welcome, and thank you for joining me on this herbal journey, and let the unfurling of our adventures begin!
